Build a home office that you will truly want to work from

Freelancers are always looking for ways to increase productivity, or at least they should be. You can find many apps, books, articles and entire websites dedicated to this topic.

Did you know that your home office majorly influences your productivity?

Here are some things you can do in your office to give you an extra boost of inspiration and productivity.

Basic items for your home office

Home Office: Sit-stand desk

Table

Here is one of the most important items on our list; after all, is where we spend most of our lives.

The amount of space needed on the table relies heavily on the type of your work.

If you work all day on the computer, you probably need less space than those who do manual work; for example: illustrations, modeling, etc.

When selecting your table, make sure that it can accommodate all the items you need for your job.

I recommend that you use a “sit-stand desk,” it is critical to health alternate between sitting and standing during the day.

Home Office: Herman Miller Aeron chair

Chair

Look for an ergonomic chair. It will allow you to sit upright and provide the necessary support for you to stay focused for extended periods of time. Don’t forget to take a break every 1 hour and also switch often between standing and sitting.

Home office: Storage solution

Storage

It will also depend on the type of work you do. Maybe you need to store paper or have lots of equipment and peripherals.

But I recommend that you leave as little as possible on top of your desk. It will reduce distractions; so it’s a good idea to have a drawer and / or shelves next to your workstation.

For items that you don’t use daily it’s recommended that you have a wardrobe or a binder for extra storage in your home office.

By keeping your things organized, you decrease the amount of time you lose looking for what you need. Therefore you reduce stress. The more disorganized your desk is, more stress you’ll have.

Home office: Day light

Lightning

Last on the list, but not least important, is your home office’s lighting. Certainly, the best you can have is natural light. However, not all offices are blessed with large windows. If this is your case, mirrors can help improve the lighting in your room.

If your office has one window, consider placing a large mirror on the opposite side. The light coming through the window is reflected back into the room in different directions. It will also make your office look bigger and airier because it gives the illusion of depth.

But if the natural lighting is not an option or if you get to work too early or at night, consider investing in a lamp or two and a desk lamp.

And then when you’ve got it all ready, finish the ambience set-up with this awesome playlist we curated for your working days to be happy and happier!
